Effective ingredients Gígja Kvam grew up just south of Akureyri. For years, she quietly observed and helped her grandmother gather local herbs for their health and healing properties. As an adult, she started her own little cottage industry, preparing creams and lotions that have built quite a reputation in Iceland over the past three decades. Pristine environment Iceland’s unpolluted soil and clean air mean plants grow quite slowly, with research showing that they typically contain more active ingredients. Icelandic herbs are particularly powerful, especially when hand-picked at optimum times and treated with care and precision. Sustainable skincare Urtasmiðjan is still the small family business, which Gígja sold to Bylgja Sveinbjörnsdóttir in 2020. Bylgja now runs the production just south of Akureyri where she lives, hand-picking most of the plants around her farm.
