53 ENGLISH Laxarvatn lake is located close to highway 59, near the Solheimar farm at Laxardalsheidi. Distance from Reykjavik is aprox. 180 km if you take the Brattabrekka route from the south. You can also take the Holtavorðuheidi route. For further information on routes, please check the road atlas or GPS- instructions (see the coordinates on the left side). Regular cars are not recommended as the road can be difficult to negotiate. Thus we recommend 4x4 vehicles. The lake is only about 0.5 km 2 . The well know salmon river, Laxá in Dölum, flows from the lake. Camping is free of charge, however there are no toilets or any other hygiene facilities. There is an excellent prospect for brown trout fishing. The average size of an individual catch is about 1-3 pounds. The twilight zone can be amazing since the brown trout draws closer to the bank at that time. Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk, but you need to register between 7 am and 10 pm at the Solheimar farm. Dogs only allowed in accordance with the landowner. Contact person at Solheimar is Dadi Einarsson, tel. +354-863-7702.
