35 ENGLISH Hítarvatn is located at Mýri in Borgarbyggð, near Borgarnes, on Iceland’s western coast. Distance from Reykjavík is 120 km through Hvalfjarðargöng (Hvalfjörður tunnel) and the town of Borgarnes. It is possible to drive all the way to the lake. The lake’s size is 7.6 km2. The Hítará River, renowned for salmon fishing, originates in the lake. Camping is free of charge. Toilets are located in a lodge nearby. Hitarvatn supplies very good brown trout and char. The best supply of fish is where creeks enter the lake. Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk, in the period of 26th May to 31st August. Pleas have your Fishing Card or dayticket handy when fishing guard might check for permits. No GSM coverage is by the lake!
